History 311 Course Description: A survey of United States History from the 1860s to the late 20th century. We cover the historical development of the United States, including its political, social, cultural, military, and economic history. We study how Americans have experienced the often conflicting ideals of nation and locality, liberty and equality, urban and rural, immigrant and native, wealth and poverty, spiritual and secular, freedom and security, individuality and conformity.
