My first impression of the Fish was that this was a poem about a fish that had been caught several times before, as evidenced by the hooks still in his jaw. The poem describes the fish, so much so, that I began to sympathize with it just as the speaker had. The fish had grown tired of fighting to get away and finally, this time when captured did not give any resistance. However the speaker, sympathizing with the fish, ends up letting him go.
