Project
1: Photo Restoration Based on skills acquired from class readings, movies and links, you will restore an old or damaged photograph. The photo should be restored to as near original as possible. You will turn in two files: a scan of the damaged, discolored, disgusting original and a beautiful resored image. I'll post both in the gallery to show before and after. The best way to approach this project is to find an old family photograph that's showing age, discoloration and harsh use. I've picked up old photos at junk or antique stores that are perfect for this type of project. As an alternative you can "age" a more contemporary photo with folds scratches and tears. I don't recommend you do this to Grandma's wedding picture. You must use a real photo..that is, no pictures out of books or magazines. You will be demonstrating scanning, resolution management and restoration techniques. Here are some samples of student work. Project Due Date: See Schedule • Your skill with Photoshop is increasing rapidly. In this project you'll combine at least two images (one of which is an animal-any animal) into an integrated image (looks like the two pictures are one). The combination must surprise through contradiction or be totally unexpected. Advertisers do this to us everyday...create an illusion using Photoshop. Here's your chance to get back. This project will focus on selection tools, layers and creative thinking. The greatest challenge is coming up with an idea. Second, you have to find the images you'll use (original photos, scanned 3D images or 2D pictures). The most successful projects will demonstrate creativity and smooth transitions between the images that make the composite image believable. When you turn-in your final image be sure to include small versions of the images you used so we can see how you blended your critter. Below is an example of a final image as I expect it to be turned-in. You can arrange the smaller images at right side or bottom which ever works best. To create this composite image first enlarge the canvas on your completed original to make room
Here are some samples of student work. Project Due Date: See Schedule The focus of this project is to further refining our blending skills. You will create a composite image (one image that's made up of several individual images)of an outdoor scene. The scene will contradict our traditional view of the world. You might call it surrealistic...becasue in nature, this scene will not exist. You must use at least three images and the images must be blended to look like they "fit" into the scene. We see these images all the time in advertising becasue they are attention getting and visually, our need to understand and create order drives us to try to make sense out of them (Gestalt Design). The final image should be no larger than 8 x 10 inches and saved as a jpeg. **Added Instructions-Submit your final image with small versions of all the images you used included. See this link for instrucitons on how to do this. Here are some samples from two contemporary photographers who happen to be husband and wife. But their styles couldn't be more different: Here are some samples of previous students' work:
Project 4-Cover Story-WIRED Magazine
Note: Turn-in with images you used in margin Project Due Date: See Schedule Blended images such as the one above can make compelling and powerful statements without saying a word. Your challenge with this project is to design a cover for WIRED magazine with a collage of images (at least three images must be used). The image must speak for itself but you can also include brief headline type. The sample has a lot of type which is not necessary for this project. Keep it simple, let the image you create speak for itself. WIRED is about culture and technology. Pick a topic you feel strongly about and find images that will help you make a powerful statement. You can make your own WIRED cover by downloading their title/logo or start with the blank WIRED cover here. Turn-in with small images placed in right side of expanded canvas.
Final Project- Photoshop Poster-Leader in Arts or Sciences Project Due Date: See Schedule Create a poster featuring a leader in the arts or sciences who is no longer living, perhaps as a memorial featuring his/her life and work that reflects his contribution to the arts. Research available srouces to find the best quality image of this person and combine it with at least two additional images that illumiate the the person's life work. The poster
must include color, although you may incorporate black and white
images. Blend or combine the images using the techniques we learn
in class. The text will be created in Photoshop and it should "resonate" the
mood of your collage. You can incorporate scanned artifacts
or texture. Concept sketch is required: see schedule Here are some samples of student work: (These only show the poster..include small images in your submission)
