Course Description:

This course focuses on the integration of office technology and business skills in the work environment.  Topics include hardware and software; e-mail, voice, and fax communications; electronic calendars and scheduling; Internet resources; and the virtual office.  This is an introductory course recommended for all business students.

 

Prerequisite:

None

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

·        define the terms needed to understand office information systems and technologies

·        categorize hardware and software options available for creating, storing, and distributing business information

·        analyze work assignments and select appropriate methods for completing them

·        evaluate the integration of office technology and procedures, and

·        identify sources of information for staying abreast of changes in office technology.

 

Technology Expectation

I expect that you have basic technology and Internet skills if you are in this course. If you need to review any of the basics, please go to the Microsoft site and brush up. http://www.microsoft.com/insider/internet. If you need help with D2L, go to http://d2lresources.losrios.edu and choose the topic you want to review.

If you have never taken a course online and do not have the skills above, you should complete HCD 320, a course on online student success.

 

Strategies for Student Success

You should budget adequate time each week for reading the textbook and completing all assignments. You will be responsible for keeping up-to-date with all exercises and assignments. You should also be respectful of your fellow students at all times. This course takes a lot of time to complete successfully so please plan accordingly.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance is expected at the final class meeting.  Students are to arrive on time and remain for the entire session.  Your grade will be lowered a full letter grade if you miss this class meeting. 

A student is expected to participate regularly online (assignments, exams, and/or other participation requirements).  The student accepts full responsibility for following the proper procedures for dropping a course. 

 

Evaluation & Grading Policy:

Final grades given in the course will be a letter grade.  Points earned on assignments, quizzes, and exams are totaled at the end of the semester and are determined as follows:

Course Requirements:

·        Assignments include chapter questions, activities and exercises, online quizzes and exams, term project, group assignments, and oral presentation.

·        Neatness, grammar, punctuation, proofreading, formatting, and accuracy are important aspects of the communication process.  Please consider them as assignments are completed because it will affect your grade.

·        Assignments are due on the due date to receive full credit. 

·        Points are assigned according to format, grammar, content, organization and presentation.  Please save all papers you submit throughout the semester.

Your specific assignments will be listed in D2L each Monday.  Please submit assignments as instructed using D2L or e-mail on the day designated.

NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED.

 

Simulations/ Group Projects

This course requires a simulation activity that will imitate the actual duties of an office administrator.  Students will work in groups of 4 or fewer to: 

·        create a team operating agreement and work plan

·        assign and complete the work

·        develop and deliver a 15 minute group presentation, and

·        consolidate all documents into a portfolio.

Group assignments will be graded and all participants in the group will receive the same grade.  However, a student who fails to complete an equitable portion of the work for the project will have his/her grade lowered a full letter grade.
