Course Description

This course focuses on the integration of office technology and business skills in the work environment.  Topics include hardware and software; e-mail, voice, and fax communications; electronic calendars and scheduling; Internet resources; and the virtual office.  This is an introductory course recommended for all business students.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

bullet

define the terms needed to understand office information systems and technologies

bullet

categorize hardware and software options available for creating, storing, and distributing business information 

bullet

analyze work assignments and select appropriate methods for completing them

bullet

evaluate the integration of office technology and procedures, and

bullet

identify sources of information for staying abreast of changes in technology.

Course Procedures

Students are expected to read the text and complete in-class and outside assignments on a timely basis.  These will include chapter-end activities, chapter quizzes, work on grammar and punctuation, preparation of a formal written report, and oral presentation.

In addition to reading text and completing above assignments, student will participate in classroom discussions and work in groups on problem-solving and coordinated writing projects.

Assignments

Included are end-of-chapter projects, class discussions, hands-on familiarization with the telephone, fax, scanner, and all-in-one printer, an office simulation, and a short oral presentation or demonstration. Students may work in teams for most class activities.

Course Policies

·        Code of Conduct – All students are required to adhere to the student’s code of conduct found on page 287 of the American River College Catalog.

·        Respect – All students are expected to respect the rights of other students and the instructor. 

·        Plagiarism – Unless otherwise specified, all assignments you complete are to be your own work.  You may cite and quote other sources, but you may not plagiarize.  Plagiarism will result in a zero for the piece of work in which the plagiarism occurs; however, if plagiarism occurs more than once, disciplinary actions will be taken.

·        Cheating – I subscribe to the college’s policy regarding cheating.  If I suspect you of cheating in this class, I will issue a warning and you will receive a zero (0) for the assignment.  Further incidences may result in immediate failure of the course.

·        Technological gadgets – All pagers and cellular phones must be turned off or set on vibrate.  They cannot be answered in class.  If you must return a call during class, you must exit the classroom.

·        Record keeping – The final record of student grades is my grade book/spreadsheet.  If a student identifies discrepancies between my records and his/her own, the student is responsible for the following:

·          bringing the discrepancy to my attention, and

·          providing proof of the discrepancy (e.g., the returned graded paper)   

·        Dropping – If you wish to drop the class, you are responsible for following the proper procedure for dropping a course.  Failure to drop may result in an automatic “F.”

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes and to arrive on time. Log in and out on the Track-It computer. If you are unable to attend class, leave a voice or E-mail message. Some class activities cannot be made up. 

Your grade may be affected if an assignment or quiz occurred at the time of your absence.  In addition, class participation points will be awarded based on your attendance and contribution to the discussions held in class.

Grading Policy

Each student will receive a class folder with an Assignment Schedule and detailed weekly assignment sheets. Points will be assigned for all activities: homework, hands-on projects, office simulation, and presentation/demonstration. 

Students are expected to exhibit personal qualities required of an office professional. Grades will be lowered for poor attendance, tardiness, and lack of participation in class activities. 

Tests include chapter tests and a final exam. Questions come from the textbook. Final grades will be based on total points earned:

A 90 - 100 %
B 80 - 89%
C 70 - 79%
D 60 - 69%
F 59% and below
