Art H 308- Renaissance Art

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Study of the architecture, graphic art, painting and sculpture of European cultures from the Proto-Renaissance to the Post Impressionist period.  Artworks of each major period will be discussed, analyzed, and placed within an historical context.

REQUIRED TEXT BOOK:  History of Art, Volume II,
6th edition, by Janson and Janson, Prentice Hall publishers, N.Y.

CLASS FORMAT:  This course is taught primarily with slide lectures, supplemented by video clips and handout information. You are expected to take notes on every lecture.  Please practice in-class courtesy.  No camcorders, pagers, laser pointers allowed.  Switch off all cell phones watch alarms or anything else that can cause a disruption.  If you disrupt my lecture I may ask you to leave for the rest of that class.

EXAMINATIONS:  There will be one midterm exam and one final exam.  Exams consist of slide identification, multiple choice, matching, and true/false questions.  A complete review for each exam will be given, in small daily segments.  You must bring a Scantron #882 form and a #2 pencil to both exams.  No make-up exams will be given unless the student has a doctor’s note (or some- thing comparable), or makes arrangements with me in advance.  Make-ups consist primarily of essay questions.

If you get a D or F on the midterm see me about doing a 600 word writing assignment that may earn you a one-grade upgrade on that midterm.

GRADES: are based on exam scores:  Midterm=40%    Final=60%
