Art H 334 - International Contemporary Art

This class is taught in the Spring semester only.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is a worldwide survey of trends in art and architecture since 1980, with an emphasis on the diversity of contemporary global cultures.  New art mediums such as video, computer and performance art are highlighted.  Social and political concerns in art are another primary focus.      Prerequisites:  Art 5, Art 10 or Humanities 2

CLASS FORMAT:  The course is taught with slide lectures, video presentations, in-class discussions, and assigned readings from various handouts.

TEXT:  There is no required text.  Instead you will be given a series of handouts throughout the semester.  Final exam material will originate partly from these handouts.

NOTES:  You are expected to take substantive notes during class.  If you would like some help on your note-taking skills, see me.  No tape recorders, cell phones, pagers, laser pointers, giga pets, or any other electronic device which can cause a distraction are allowed.

EXAMINATIONS:  There is one midterm exam and one final exam.  Exams consist entirely of essay questions.  Preparation for each exam will begin two weeks prior.  You must take the final exam in order to pass the course.

Make up exams will be given only with an excused absence.  That means a doctor’s note or some other comparable written documentation.

ATTENDANCE:  You are expected to attend every class.  Excessive absences, whether excused or not, may lower your final grade.  No students will be dropped by me, except for first day no-shows.  If you wish to drop, you must do so yourself by via the normal process.

WRITTEN PROJECT:  A written report project will be due on the last day of regular instruction.  I will give out specific guidelines in class.  I prefer to know your topic in advance, so please write out a short proposal and run it past me before starting.

GRADES:  Your final semester grade is based on the following formula:  30% midterm exam ,  30% written project, and 40% final exam.
