Long Description: Hybridization via embryo culture expands the tomato gene pool to include the wild related species S. lycopersicoides, S. sitiens, L. chilense and L. peruvianum. Somatic hybridization further expands the gene pool to include the wild related species S. ochranthum and S. juglandifolium.
Tomato Gene Pool - expanded via tissue culture methods
Long Description: Hybridization of L. esculentum and L. peruvianum produces only undeveloped seeds. Culture of those seeds enables production of embryo callus which can be regenerated to produce hybrid plants.
