Module E - How can psychology affect my health?
Woman meditating or doing yogaWelcome to the last learning module this semester!  As you near the end of your whirlwind of a semester you will finish up your journey by exploring the interaction between the mind and the body.  As you know the study of the mind and body dates back to the early philosophers and continues today in the field of health psychology.  In this lesson you will further delve into the mind-body connection as you explore consciousness, sleep, stress, and mental illness as they relate to physical and emotional health.  I hope that you enjoy this learning module - it is full of interesting and helpful information for everybody!

Lesson 2 - Identifying and treating mental illness.

What are the first words that pop into your head when you hear the words "mental illness"?  If you are like most people you probably think of crazy, dangerous, violent people in institutions, or are homeless, who talk to themselves, see things that aren't really there, and hear voices - is that what you thought about?  Or did you think about your family member who lives with depression, your significant other who struggles with sexual arousal, or the ADHD child?  Mental illness is more than what we have been told it is in movies and film.  Take this quiz (http://health.discovery.com/games-quizzes/mental-health-myths-quiz) to find out what you know about mental illness now before reading the chapter.

This lesson is designed to broaden your understanding of what mental illness is and isn't.  Be sure to use the Module E Lesson 2 Objectives to learn more about what it is, how it's diagnosed, and the many different faces of mental illness.
